Texas’ fourth-largest city was originally a riverside village named Waterloo, located in a buffalo-hunting region whose occupants were the Tonkawa and Comanche Native American tribes. In 1839 scouts selected the region to become the permanent capital of the Republic of Texas, naming it Austin to pay respect to Stephen F. Austin, who was the founder of Texas.
By 1840, the city was officially incorporated with just 856 residents. During this time; however, the Mexican invasion threatened Texas, and more specifically, Austin, due to its location within the state. In 1842, the government moved to Houston, however, the citizens of Austin started the Archive War, in order to keep Austin as the capital city, which resulted in the town’s citizens forcefully keeping hold of government records. Three years later, in 1845, the government returned to Austin, and Texas was admitted to the union!
