There is no income tax in Washington State and there are a total of nine states in the US that have no income tax.

The attraction to move from another state or relocate from another country to Washington (WA) is very appealing for many reasons. Having, roughly 2,500 miles of marine shoreline, a vibrant shipping industry centered around major ports, and dozens of inhabited islands make Washington state a haven for both businesses and individuals who prefer a near-water location.

Income taxes are something we all need to pay and we are going to specifically cover the Washington state income tax rate when you take into consideration the other taxes you will be liable to pay on your income if you reside in the Evergreen State.

What is the Washington State income tax rate

Does Washington Have Income Tax

We are not trying to dash anyone’s hopes of not paying any tax in Washington state, but even though the Washington state income tax rate is 0%, you will still have to pay other taxes on your income whether you work for someone else or own a Washington business or franchise.

If you live and work in Washington state your paycheck will reflect 0% for income tax deductions regardless of the amount you earn, but you will pay other Federal taxes that will affect your take-home pay. Likewise, if, as a business owner you pay yourself a salary through payroll or take a monthly, quarterly, or annual distribution/dividend from the net profit your business generates, you will still be liable for some income tax.

Does Washington state have income tax? The answer is NO. Having said that, since the US government is made up of local, state, and federal jurisdictions, you can rest assured that the government is going to tax you in one form or another on your income. You will not, however, have to pay any corporate tax to Washington state if you own a business.

The goal of the information we are providing you with is to give you an overview of the likely tax you will pay on your earnings in Washington state. There are multiple factors that affect your tax liability such as being single or married, having children and/or dependents, and other circumstances, and there is never a one-size-fits-all scenario, even though Washington state does not have an income tax. You should always seek the help of a Washington tax professional when filing taxes.

Another thing to be mindful of is that just because Washington state has no income tax, it does not mean that you will not be liable to pay any taxes on your earnings – it might just mean you will pay less than if you lived or worked in another state with a higher income tax than 0%.

You should also consider that while there is no income tax in Washington state, you are still liable to pay Washington state sales tax on groceries, clothes, and other goods (plus some services), which imposes a higher than average rate than many other states. The base sales tax rate in Washington is 6.5% and in addition to this, you can expect to pay up to a further 3.9%, driving the sales tax rate as high as 10.4%. This varies by each local municipality.

Washington State Income Tax Calculator

Although the Washington state income tax rate is 0%, we have provided you with various scenarios of the tax you will pay on your income as a resident of Washington (WA).

The following Washington state income tax calculator should be used for approximation purposes and does not represent legal authority, or the exact amount of Washington state income tax (including Federal and FICA tax) that you will be liable for – it is a guide based on information from the IRS, the State of Washington Department of Revenue, and other sources.

The range we have provided in the Washington state income tax calculator is from $1,200 per month or $14,400 per year to $12,000 per month, or $144,000 per year. The gross monthly wage of $2,340 or $28,080 per year in the table represents the Washington state minimum wage of $13.50 per hour. A standard full-time position in the US typically includes a 40-hour workweek that translates to 2,080 hours worked in a year (40 hours x 52 weeks).

Finally, while the state has no income tax, what is also beneficial to residents of Washington (WA), is that it does not impose any local income tax as some other states do. This means that once you’ve finished your federal tax return, you’re done with your taxes for the year.

You will, however, have to pay sales tax on nearly all tangible goods sold in the state of Washington as well as many services. Among the services subject to sales tax are cleaning, construction, installations, altering, lawn and yard maintenance, fitness club memberships, tattoos, catering services, and recreational activities. Digital purchases such as music and video are also subject to sales tax. Vehicle sales come with an additional 0.3% tax on top of the total sales tax rate.

Washington State Income Tax Brackets

The above table provides you with a broad range of different Washington state income tax rates. The income tax calculator used in the table is based on a single taxpayer (not married or filing as married) claiming one personal exemption.

The Washington state income tax rates in the table reflect almost a worst-case scenario for a US taxpayer because those that are married and have dependents can typically take advantage of other deductions, which would effectively make the federal income tax you pay, less than what you see in the table.

Again, you should always consult a professional when it comes to calculating your Washington (WA) tax liability, since other factors may affect the amount of income tax you pay on your earnings in Washington. The Washington state income tax brackets are fixed at 0% across the board, but you are still responsible for paying Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%), totaling 7.65%.

You are also responsible for paying Federal Income Tax regardless of whether you reside in Washington (WA) with its favorable 0% income tax rate. These various tax brackets are illustrated in the table above and vary based on your income level.
